A Weekend in Houston

Take a look at a few of my favourite things to eat, see and do in Houston!

Karbach Brewing Co.

This is the cleanest, most organized, and overall fantastic breweries I’ve visited. Most breweries have food trucks to serve food, but Karbach has their own kitchen. Plus, every item on their menu has one of their beers incorporated in it! We ordered a soft pretzel with Weisse Versa beer cheese and fish ‘n chips battered with Weekend Warrior. We sipped on the Karbachtoberfest and Hop Delusion as well. Everything was absolutely delicious and I already want to go back!

The Heights Theater

This venue is on a renovated block in Houston and it was quaint, sweet, and reminded me a lot of a small town square. Noah was of course as amazing as ever – I’ve seen him at least 7 or 8 times now! If you haven’t heard of him before, (which is a true shame), listen to his tunes here!

Museum of Fine Arts

We went to see the Van Gogh exhibit – after standing in the outside line in 90 degree weather for almost 1.5 hours, we walked through the beautifully well-curated exhibit. I was disappointed to see a lot of replicas of Van Gogh’s work, and only 40 – 50 of his original works (and not seeing his most famous pieces like Starry Night). I have luckily been able to see his work at the museum in Amsterdam as well as pieces at the MET in New York and National Gallery in London, but I wanted those same viewing experiences for my husband, sister and brother in law. However, the museum itself is beautiful and there’s lots to see in their two different buildings!

Les Ba’get

I love everything about this place. I visited in 2017 and it was so nice being able to visit them in their new space. We ordered the lemongrass grilled pork spring rolls to start. Not only is the presentation beautiful, but they were incredibly fresh and tasty!

I had the hoisin chicken vermicelli bowl with a fried egg and Joel had the brisket banh mi. Also all their baguettes are GLUTEN FREE! Everything was ab-so-lutel-ly perfect. This is definitely one of my favourite restaurants – if only they were in Austin! We finished with a strawberry mandarin milkshake – so sweet and refreshing!

Benjy’s

We came here on a whim and I’m so glad we did because this place is precious! The intimate interiors were just gorgeous. We ordered the queso flameado and it came with duck sausage, roasted peppers, and tortillas. They were so wonderful to bring me gluten free pita bread to have with it! We also shared the jumbo lump crab salad with peaches, avocado and mint. It was super light and refreshing. I also had the crispy rock shrimp with green tomatoes and coriander aioli – it was a huge portion and also completely gluten free! Joel had the crunchy chicken which he loved (I had a few bites of the cheesy potato gratin and charred broccolini on his side). I highly suggest this spot because it delicious and they’re very accommodating to people with restricted diets!
