A Weekend in Fredericksburg, TX

I’ve been out to Fredericksburg several times, from weekend dates to my bachelorette party, and it’s growing with new wineries year after year! Take a look at my favourite parts about this historic German town!

Where to Drink

Alstadt Brewery

This German pub replica is a must visit! Make sure you have time for a full meal because the restaurant is exquisite! If you’re a beer drinker- get a flight. If you’re like me and have your eyes on the wine list, get the 2015 Gerard Bertrand rosé!
I also recommend the mesclun salad with poached shrimp, the Altstadt cheeseburger (it’s a blend of chuck, brisket & short rib), the fish and chips (that tartar is amazing), the sausage plate which comes with three types of house-made sausage, the chocolate brownie with housemade vanilla bean ice cream and the peaches and cream with peach! I’m most impressed that the chef makes everything from scratch – from sauces to sausages it’s all housemade! Altstadt has awards from around the world – notable ones include their Lager, Kolsch, and Amber. Fun fact: my friends Carly and Nick were the first people to have their wedding in their event space in November 2018! It was one of the most beautiful and delicious weddings I’ve been to!

Baron’s Creek

I was surprised at myself because I tried 8 wines and there wasn’t one I didn’t like. Seriously, I LOVED them all! Our sommelier that lead us through the tasting was so incredibly knowledgeable and gave us so much insight into the making of their wine! Here’s what I had (and LOVED) 2018 Albariño, 2016 Chardonnay, 2018 Rosé, 2017 Petit Verdot, 2018 Le Baron (mix of petit verdot and syrah blend), 2018 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and 2017 Old Vine Zinfandel (I believe this one was over 50 years old). The tasting room is quaint but spacious, and the outside area is large and so beautiful! They also have villas you can rent (which i think would be pretty dreamy).

Becker Vineyards

This is one of the most popular winery destinations and for good reason – beautiful views, delicious wines, and rich history! This was the first winery in Fredericksburg I visited several years ago, and it’s a favourite of mine to go back to. It was where Joel and I spent our first Valentine’s together and one of my bachelorette stops! I recommend bringing a picnic so you can enjoy a nice lunch before or after your tasting.

A few of my faves: Viognier Reserve, Provencal, Iconoclast, and the Malbec Reserve

Messina Hof Winery

This quaint but pretty winery is making some truly great wine. I loved our wine tasting experience – our sommelier was very knowledgeable and that made our experience all that much better! They have a few different locations around Texas – I actually visited the Grapevine one as a kid with my dad while we were passing through town (it’s a random memory I have but a really sweet one because the winemaker was there and my dad was really excited!)

A few of my faves: Viognier, Petit Verdot, and Paulo Port

Where to Stay

For the minimalist: Secret Garden Room at The Mulberry House

We stayed here when our friend’s got married at Altstadt and it was the perfect spot for a place to crash! The house is beautiful and the owner had a full freshly made breakfast ready for us when we woke up!

For a large group: Adorable Haus A&B

This is where we stayed for my bachelorette party. It was spacious and had everything we needed! It ended up being really cheap when split between 8 people and it’s right in the middle of town.

Romantic weekend getaway: E-Pie’s Guesthaus

Joel and I stayed here during our first Valentine’s day and it’s right off Main Street. I made dinner in the kitchen and we had the best night’s sleep in the king size bed. Also there’s a hot tub on the deck which was soooo nice!

**I’ll be honest – I haven’t eaten out much in Fredericksburg other than two places (one which I didn’t like and the other is now closed) because I usually pick up stuff from HEB and cook or bring prepared foods. I’ve seen a few new restaurants open up, but I would advise bringing food with you… Especially to the wineries that allow outside food because there’s nothing dreamier than lounging on a blanket with a fantastic bottle of wine and your own picnic lunch.
