The ONLY Moroccan food in Austin is coming from an amazing restaurant called Darna. Not only is their decor imported from Morocco, but their recipes are ones the owners brought from their home, too.
We started off with traditional mint green tea sweetened with cane sugar and a Greek salad which was a perfect appetizer. We then had a Moroccan salad platter with hummus, couscous, spiced carrots, green peppers, tomatoes and baba ghanouj, served with homemade pita! Fresh, spicy and tasty!
For the main entree we tried THREE different types of tagine!
The first one was a mix of ground beef and lamb meatballs marinated in traditional Moroccan spices cooked with tomatoes, garlic and herbs and a fried egg. Traditionally, Moroccans eat French bread/baguettes with their meals instead of pita or rice. I’m ALL about it.
The next two tagines were a spicy lemon chicken with caramelized onions, and braised lamb with prunes. The lamb was definitely my favourite! The way that Moroccans mix their spices with sweet ingredients is different than most cuisines I’ve had but it’s so delicious!
I also tried their nut-filled baklava and cream-filled baklava and they were SO buttery, rich and tasty!! I recommend trying Darna at lunch or dinner and experiencing a true Moroccan meal.
